St. Rita Quilters

St. Rita’s Sewing Circle began about 1918 and is the oldest of St. Peters sewing groups. At first, the ladies of St. Rita’s did embroidery and other sewing work in addition to quilting, but now almost all of their work is quilting. At present, there are about a dozen members of the group. They meet starting about 7:00 a.m. on Thursdays (in the beautiful new Quilt/Scout Room beneath Selinger Centre). All the members may not be there the whole time, but attend as they have time depending on their other activities, until mid-afternoon. If you would like more information on this group, please call Marcia Schweiss at 573-896-4402.

St. Ann Quilters

In July, 1987, several quilters who also worked during the day decided to split off from the Sew-N-Sews to form an evening group. They chose the name St. Ann Quilters and meet on Monday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m.  Current members are Marilyn Deeken, Brenda Engelbrecht, Dorothy Haller, Janet Kremer, Lucille Krummen, Barbara Martin, and Shirley Stieferman. Lucille is the chair of the group.  The group has worked on quilts for people in Michigan and had calls to quilt for people in Oregon and Idaho. The charge is $1.00 per hour.  St. Ann‘s makes an annual donation to the pastor for use in the parish.

Sew-N-Sews

Another group was organized in January 1981 as a class to learn quilting, first meeting in a private home and later in a room at St. Peter School.  In May of that year, the name Sew N Sew Quilters of St. Peter was adopted and they began meeting every Monday from about 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 or 2:00 p.m.  The Sew N Sews also enjoy the refurbished and well-appointed Quilt/Scout Room. The nine or so members of this group come in at varied times, again depending upon their other commitments.  Some are there most of the day, while others are there only two or three hours.  For more information, please call Esther Kempker at 635-6789 or Helen Cline at 893-5335.
