On Thursday, August 10, 2023, Bishop McKnight signed a resolution declaring St. Peter Catholic Church shall now be known as the Proto-Cathedral of St. Peter.
Upon the decision of Pope Pius XII in 1956, the State of Missouri was divided into four dioceses, and the Diocese of Jefferson City was formed. St. Peter Church was selected as the first Cathedral of the new diocese by Bishop Joseph M. Marling, C.PP.S. For 12 years, from his installation in 1956 until Christmas Eve 1968, St. Peter was the mother church of the Diocese, when the cathedral’s jurisdiction was transferred to St. Joseph Parish.
